Embroidered Orangutan Trucker Hat — Cleveland

Cleveland’s zoo has set the date. The new primate complex, built on the footprint of the old RainForest, opens to the public at noon on Thursday 22 October after more than two years of construction. The first phase cost $60 million, which the zoo calls the largest capital project in its history, and the finished build will run to around 140,000 square feet.

Hundreds of animals across more than sixty species move in, but the orangutans are the headline act: an expanded habitat with linked indoor and outdoor space, so the apes choose where they spend the day. Entry is by timed reservation released the morning of each visit. A gorilla habitat follows later, with the whole thing due in 2032.

An orangutan is the right animal for thread. The long arm, the flanged cheeks, the shaggy coat that reads as direction rather than detail — all of it is what embroidery is good at, and none of it is what a stamped metal badge can do.

• Patch: full-colour embroidered twill, die-cut to the ape’s own outline with a merrowed overlock edge following the silhouette — no border, no enclosing shape. The coat is worked in three tones of rust with the stitch direction following the hair, against a chocolate face disc and a cream muzzle. Roughly 2.5 inches tall.
• Cap: Richardson 112 structured trucker — cotton-poly front panel, mesh back, snapback closure. The Dusty Rose/White option is an Infinity Charlie ponytail cap.
• Six colorways: White, Black, Navy/Caramel, Kelly/White, Heather Grey/Black, Dusty Rose/White (Ponytail).
