Darlington, South Carolina has been ruining race cars since 1950.
The track is a mile and a third and famously lopsided — one end tighter than the other, because the man who built it had to bend the shape around a neighbor's minnow pond. Drivers run it with their right side inches off the outside wall, and most of them come home wearing the proof: a long scrape of paint down the flank of the car. On Sunday, September 6, the Labor Day 500-miler came down to old tires and a leader who ran out of grip, and the win changed hands in the last handful of laps.
