Some news you read and forget by lunch. Some of it you want to keep. This one is the second kind, and it is the only design in today's drop — one story, one patch, no filler.
Late last week in La Verne, California, a mother black bear and her three cubs went into an open water cistern at Marshall Canyon County Park and could not get back out. The walls were smooth and too high for cubs. City firefighters and California wildlife officers spent hours at the tank easing a ramp down into it, then backed off and waited. The cubs came up one at a time. Their mother came up last. All four of them walked off into the foothills together.

What we kept from that morning is the shape of the animal. The patch is a custom contour cut — no circle around it, no shield, no banner. The die follows the bear itself: the low head, the shoulder hump, the four legs mid-stride. It is cut from dark brown leather with a burnished edge and a run of contrast stitching just inside the outline, so the silhouette reads clean from across a room.
There is no lettering on it at all. That was deliberate. A patch with a date stamped on it belongs to one week; a bear belongs to whoever likes bears. If you know what happened at Marshall Canyon, the hat is about that. If you don't, it is a very good bear on a very good cap. Both are fine by us.
