Three unrelated things happened in the same few days, and all three are about finishing something that took a long time. A city closed a gap in a path. A 91-year-old finished a walk he started 359 days earlier. And a small Oregon town marked a hundred years since the most expensive shot of the silent era.

Cleveland closes the lakefront gap
A 2.7-mile paved path opened this week along North Marginal Road, linking downtown at East 9th to the East 55th Street Marina at Gordon Park. It closes the missing link that has kept the lakefront in two pieces, and it took two years of building to do it.
What it means in practice: you can now ride or walk from downtown out to the East Side parks without stopping, for the first time. Cleveland has been promising its lakefront back for decades. This is a real piece of it.

Katahdin, at 91
On August 31 a 91-year-old hiker reached the top of Mount Katahdin in Maine and became the oldest person ever to walk the full 2,190-mile route north. It took 359 days.
He fell 71 times. One of those falls was roughly 600 feet from the summit, which is the sort of detail that turns a statistic back into a person. He had held this record once already, at 82, and went back out to take it again.

Cottage Grove, 1926 and 2026
A hundred years ago this summer, a film crew near Culp Creek, Oregon ran a real locomotive off a burning timber trestle in front of 4,000 spectators. One take, no second chance, and for a long time the most expensive shot anyone had put on film.
