Today's three are a sculpture, a planet and thirty thousand fish. What they have in common is that each one is a thing coming back — a city reclaiming what it was known for, a planet reappearing from behind the Moon, and a run of salmon returning to rivers that had nearly stopped seeing them.
Akron builds a tire seventeen feet tall
Announced September 4: a seventeen-foot sculpture built from steel and recycled racing tires is going up at Lock 3 in downtown Akron on October 29.
Two things make it notable. It is the first major contemporary outdoor artwork in the city by a woman artist. And it is a deliberate, unembarrassed nod to the century Akron spent as the rubber capital of the world — a past the city has spent some years deciding how to feel about.

The Moon hides Jupiter in broad daylight
On the morning of September 8 the Moon passes directly in front of Jupiter and holds it out of sight for roughly an hour. It is visible from Alaska, Canada, the Caribbean and most of the lower 48.
The rare part is the daylight. Occultations are not unusual at night; this one happens with the sun up, which means binoculars, a clear sky, and knowing where to look. Find the crescent first. Jupiter slides back out from behind it as a small gray-blue disc.

Thirty thousand coho come home
More than thirty thousand endangered Central California Coast coho returned to the Mendocino coast rivers this season — the Navarro, the Noyo, Pudding Creek, the Ten Mile.
That is double the previous record and roughly ten times the average of the past decade. Biologists who have been counting these fish since 2009 have said plainly that they did not expect to see a number like this in their lifetimes.
