Jezero Crater, Mars — Announced 24 September 2026 · NASA's Perseverance rover · 18.4°N 77.7°E
Jezero was chosen as a landing site because it had obviously once held water — a lake, and a river delta fanning into it from the western rim. What the rover turned up this September went further than that. Minerals in the crater floor record hot groundwater circulating underground: not just standing water at the surface, but a heated system moving through the rock. "Mars constantly throws surprises at you," as one of the mission scientists put it. The patch holds the two Marses in one disc — the dry, cratered planet we photograph today on the left, the wet one those minerals imply on the right, split straight down the middle.
