The Kerguelen Islands sit about two thousand miles from the nearest inhabited land, which is roughly why nobody noticed. On 21 September a team led from Chile and UC Berkeley published that what everyone had been calling the gentoo penguin is in fact four separate species — one of them, the southeastern gentoo of Kerguelen, new to science. It is the first penguin species named in more than a hundred years. The same paper's climate models give the islands until around 2050 before they stop suiting the bird, which makes the naming read less like a discovery than an introduction worth acting on. The patch is a king penguin, another of Kerguelen's residents and the one that stands best at two and a half inches.
