New York ate its way to a reef. Restaurant oyster shells now go out to Governors Island to cure in the open air before being returned to the harbor as hard substrate for new oysters, and more than a hundred million live oysters are back filtering the water — in a harbor where the reefs were once so thick that ships had to steer around them.
A comeback that large gets one clean symbol. The shell is die-cut to its own ribbed fan in polished stainless steel: no border, no lettering, nothing on it but the shape that did the work.
