Add a flag patch

People are designing hats in ChatGPT, Gemini and Midjourney, and the pictures look terrific on a screen. Then comes the part nobody shows you: taking that image and putting it on a cap somebody can actually wear. Some of it carries over beautifully. Some of it cannot — and the honest answer up front is worth more than a surprise in the mail.

Here is what we have learned making these, and what to expect if you send us one.

Side-by-side: the customer's AI image of the NASH trucker hat beside the real finished hat — raised teal NASH lettering, palm trees, a sunset over water, an orange rope, a floral brim and a medal on the side panel
NASH: the AI image on the left, the real hat on the right. Real hats may contain design changes. Any design element can be changed.

Can embroidery handle an AI image with gradients?

Standard thread embroidery struggles with it. Fine lines thicken, blended color breaks into flat blocks, and small text stops being readable. That limit is real, and it is why an AI design often comes back simpler than the picture you made.

We use SolidCore Embroidery™. It looks and feels like stitched work, and it holds color and fine detail that thread cannot. Where an image suits a different finish better we use UV printing or laser-engraved leatherette instead, and we tell you which one your image is getting. Both of the hats shown on our AI image to hat page came from AI images with blended color in them.

What carries over, and what does not

Most of the details that make a design yours survive the move to a cap: the shapes, the colors, the character of the artwork, the outline it was drawn to. What does not survive is anything that depends on being very small. Text below a certain size stops being readable once it is a physical object instead of a pixel grid. Hairline strokes disappear. Very fine gradients inside a tiny area flatten out.

When something in your image will not reproduce, we tell you before we make it, not after.

How does it work?

Upload your image on the custom AI hat page and add any notes about what matters to you. Front designs start at $95. We redraw the image as artwork a hat can carry and send you a proof. If your hats are in stock, your proof comes within one business day. You approve the proof, then we make the hat. Design help is included, and there is no minimum and no setup fee — one hat is a complete order.

How long does it take, and where do you ship?

If your hats are in stock, your proof comes within one business day, and your hat ships 1 to 3 business days after you approve it. Your ship date comes with the proof.

We ship to all 50 states. Our studio is in Avon Lake, Ohio, just west of Cleveland, and that is where your hat is made and shipped from.

Can I change things from the original AI image?

Yes, right up until you approve your proof. Both of the example hats on our AI hat page include changes the customer asked for after seeing the first version. An AI image is a starting point, not a specification — and the proof is where you get to move things.

Side-by-side: the AI image of the CRYO BROTHERS hat beside the real finished navy and white trucker hat with raised silver CRYO and blue BROTHERS lettering
CRYO BROTHERS: the customer chose the navy and white option from the same AI design sheet. Real hats may contain design changes. Any design element can be changed.

What should I send?

The image itself, at whatever size you have it, as long as it is clear enough to see the detail. If you have a colorway in mind, or a particular cap you want it on, say so. Richardson and Flexfit blanks come in a wide range of colors, and if you have a model in mind we will tell you whether we can get it.

If there is a design sitting in a chat window that you have been wondering about, send it over. The proof will tell you more than another render will.
