There is a stretch of flat, hot, mosquito-ridden sand at the very bottom of Texas, where the Rio Grande finally gives up and becomes the Gulf. Boca Chica. For most of its history the interesting thing about it was that almost nothing was there.
On Monday 21 September, a booster the height of a twenty-storey building was rolled out to the pad there. If the paperwork lands, it will fly on 28 September, and it will be the first time the largest launch vehicle ever built has tried to reach orbit.
Why this one is different
Rockets from Boca Chica have flown before, but always on arcs that came back down — up, over, and into the sea, deliberately. Going orbital is a different proposition entirely. It means the upper stage stays up, circling, until someone decides to bring it down. That is the whole point, and it is also the reason the regulator has taken its time: no orbital licence had ever been issued for a stage this size, and a vehicle that big coming back in the wrong way is not a small problem.
So what is actually being tested on 28 September is not really the launch. It is the landing you do not see — the controlled, deliberate return of something enormous from orbit. Get that right and the economics of putting things in space change. Get it wrong and it is a very expensive, very public reminder of why the review took so long.
Either way, 28 September at Boca Chica is a date worth knowing about. Very few places get to be the site of a genuine first, and fewer still are a sandbar that used to be famous for having nothing on it.
The hat
The Steel Rocket Trucker Hat is a custom contour cut — no badge, no border, no circle around it. The patch is die-cut to the outline of the rocket itself, in polished stainless steel, with the hull bands and rivet rows picked out in relief and a single porthole catching the light.
It started life with BOCA CHICA TEXAS 2026 lettered across the hull, and then we took the lettering off. The shape says it better on its own — and without a place name stamped on it, it reads as a rocket first, which is how most people who want a rocket on their head would rather have it.

One to watch
Launch is targeted for the morning of 28 September. Whether it works or not, it is the kind of day people remember where they were for. The Steel Rocket Trucker Hat is in the Hat Off the Press collection now, alongside the rest of them.
